MAY 2000 MEETING NOTICE

Building "New" Archival Collections

In December 1998, Thirteen/WNET public television station relocated to a
new state-of-the-art headquarters in the Penn Station area. The
establishment of the Tape Archive took place within the context of the
station's relocation to new facilities. As plans for the Tape Archive
progressed, the Reference Library was designated the official department
into which the archival operations would be integrated. This organizational
decision recognized and reinforced the need for a centralized system for
storage and retrieval of Thirteen WNET's historical properties in videotape,
on paper, and in electronic or other formats.

The present Library/Archive department consists of reference and archival
components, and has evolved into a department vital to Thirteen WNET's
research needs, and committed to collecting, classifying, protecting and
preserving the station's valuable assets. Inmagic database software was
purchased for cataloging books, tapes, and paper records, as well as for
other media in the library and archival collections. Compact shelving
provided for the consolidation of collections previously housed in disparate
locations. Climate control equipment ensured the maintenance of the best
environmental conditions for tape formats.

Library/Archive staff representing areas including the Tape Archive, the
Corporate History Archive and the Photography Archive will give
presentations about their methods of identifying, organizing and cataloging
pertinent records in their efforts to build new collections literally from
the ground up. In addition, there will be a presentation by the Records
Librarian from Thirteen WNET's Office of the General Counsel, which will
describe the history of the Corporate Legal Files. Related issues of
security, access and preservation, as well as funding in the public
television environment will also be discussed.
