San Jacinto History Museum position



The San Jacinto Museum of History (LaPorte, TX -- near Houston) has asked
me to post this project archivist position and to receive and screen
applications.  I will also be available at the upcoming Society of
Southwest Archivists meeting in Fayetteville to talk with interested
archivists.

             Position Description -- Project Archivist

The library seeks a project archivist to aid in arranging, organizing,
rehousing and describing the archives of the San Jacinto Museum of
History, and its collection of historical documents.  The primary focus is
on the processing of approximately 800-900 cubic feet of records in paper
and electronic form, as well as in other media.  This is a 2-year
grant-funded position.

RESPONSIBLE for organizing and describing the institutional archives,
implementing the Museum's records retention schedule.  Evaluates
preservation needs, makes collections accessible through printed and
electronic finding aids, and works with the cataloger in preparing
documentation for OCLC cataloging in MARC format.  Reports to the library
director.

REQUIRED: ALA-accredited MLS degree with concentration in
archives/manuscripts.  Minimum one year professional experience in a
recognzied archival facility.  Experience using OCLC, MARC-AMC;
familiarity with Internet and database programs.  Experience using SGML
preferred.  Knowledge of archival techniques, preservation procedures, and
Texas history.  Excellent written and oral communication skills, effective
interpersonal skills, ability to function as a contributing team member
in a production-oriented environment, flexibility in adapting to changing
departmental and organizational priorities, strong analytical skills and
organizational abilities, and ability to work in an automated environment.
Reading knowledge of Spanish desirable.  Physical ability to lift 40-lb.
boxes of records.
