Re: large-scale digital storage

Hi Roy et al;

As an imaging service bureau, this issue is our daily life. Our solution is
to have "tiers" of storage:

1. For projects that are currently in production, images are stored on a
mini-network of hard drives (to the tune of 100 gigabytes or so).

2.For projects that are completed but which may require frequent, repeated
use of the images, we have a 100-disc carousel.

3.Finally, for long-term storage of inactive images, we keep the CD's in a
temperature- and humidity-controlled vault.

Each of these options has its pros and cons: the drives are certainly
the speediest in terms of calling up images, but they are at the mercy of
network or hardware problems. The carousel allows you to store the images
on CD and still allows easy access to those images, but invest in a good
quality machine that will handle your CD's properly (a simple web search
should turn up more info about what's out there). Finally, the vault makes
me most comfortable, in terms of best possible storage for the CD's, but
retrieving the images requires human handling of the discs -- and that's
where most of the scratching/damage/data loss might occur. So, weigh
carefully what you require in terms of repeated access vs. stable storage,
and go from there.

Best wishes,
Susan
