Re: Approaching the grieving

Another source is your local funeral director who usually has on staff a
head of family services who deal with people grieving at the time of funeral
arrangements; sometimes its people involved with pre-need funeral
arrangements. Either way, an archivist might contact a friendly funeral
director during a non-stressful time and place and compare notes.

This is one area in which archivists should probable consult authorities
outside of archives who have long experience in such matters. Folks who run
the local Hospice operation might be one place to start as they typically
have experience dealing with grieving family after providing care for
terminally ill patients most of whom suffer from cancer. I believe in some
instances they also offer counseling on grieving.
I suspect that there are people in Psychology Departments at major
universities who instruct psychology students in counseling on grieving.
Several years ago there was a session on this topic at the Midwest Archives
Conference. I attended it but recall only that such a session was offered.
It is a topic that probably ought to be offered at archival conferences from
time to time as most archivists eventually have to deal with this issue.
Perhaps when Leslie makes the appropriate contacts to get her information
she can propose a session on this topic at the Society of Southwest
Archivists meeting and maybe even suggest it for a future SAA meeting.
