Re: Request for Lorillard PApers

Does anyone know of 18th or early 19th c. records of the P. Lorillard
Tobacco Co.? In a recent, rather cautious discussion with a Lorillard
librarian I was told that when Lows (or Lowes Corp) bought Lorillard they
had the old company records destroyed (this would have been in the last
decade, maybe even the last five years) for legal purposes. These were the
records of the oldest tobacconists in the US that likely went back to the
17th century. I am not convinced that everything I was told over the phone
was accurate or true-even though I was given a detailed description of
long-time employees crying as cartons of old records were hauled away! Does
anyone have additional information on this subject?

Thank you,

J. Thomas
