large format scanners

We recently received $1200 from a generous benefactor to use "for
anything we wanted which would benefit special collections." We have a
number of oversize items (blueprints, architectural drawings, oversize
photos) which we would like to scan (for access, not preservation). I did
some web surfing and talked to our systems people. The really large format
scanners are way beyond our price range. The systems people suggest for the
amount we have to spend the best option is an Epson GT-1000 with an 11.7"x17
scanning bed. It runs about $1100 plus shipping with all the necessary
software included.
My questions for the list are these. Have any of you had any
experience with the Epson GT-1000? If you have, what are your impressions?
Are there any other large format scanners out there that would fit both our
needs and our available resources?
        Thanks.
