ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY


POSITION:       Head of Public Services, Manuscripts Department

AVAILABLE:      September 1, 2000

DESCRIPTION

The Manuscripts Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill?s Academic Affairs Library seeks a highly qualified individual to
coordinate public service for the Library?s acclaimed Southern
Historical
Collection, Southern Folklife Collection, University Archives, and
General
and Literary Manuscripts.  The Head of Public Services has primary
responsibility for researcher orientation and reference assistance;
coordinating access to and use of materials; scheduling reference desk
coverage; and reading room security.  The position coordinates
Department
staff response to off-site inquiries including correspondence; requests
to
publish and edit materials; and telephone, fax, and email requests.  The
Head of Public Services makes frequent presentations to classes, groups,
and professional organizations about the Department and promotes use of
its collections.  Under the direction of the Department Head, the Head
of
Public Services occasionally meets with potential donors and evaluates
possible acquisitions.  The position also cooperates and coordinates
services with other library special collection departments and public
service points.  The position directly supervises one full-time
assistant,
graduate and student assistants, and occasional project staff and
interns.
The Head of Public Services is an active participant in library and
campus
committees, professional organizations, and the greater academic
community.

The Manuscripts Department, with a permanent staff of 10 FTE, 3 FTE
contract staff, and numerous student assistants, administers virtually
all
archival material held by the Academic Affairs Library of the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department holds over 17.5 million
manuscript items, 75,000 photographs, and 120,000 archival audio and
video
recordings, occupying 37,500 linear feet of shelf space. The Department
is
open 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
on
Saturday, except for University holidays. For more information, please

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: ALA-accredited MLS or Master's degree in American
history/studies; archival coursework and/or training; professional
experience with archives and/or special collections; public service
experience with archival materials; broad knowledge of Southern history
and culture; familiarity with online and print reference tools relevant
to
the position and the Department?s collections; evidence of commitment to
the archival profession; excellent communication and writing skills.

Preferred:  Knowledge of current research trends in Southern history,
music, and folklore; familiarity and/or experience with academic library
reference services in a special collections setting; administrative and
supervisory experience; excellent computer skills, with an emphasis on
utilizing technology to promote collection use and access.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment.  Salary is
commensurate with background and experience, standard State benefits of
annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan.
Librarians are members of the general faculty.
