Four Summer Positions/Harvard Law School Library Special Collections



Job Title:  Special Collections Assistant - Two positions

Contact person: David Ferris, Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts

Description of duties:  Re-folders and re-houses the papers of Learned Hand and
the records of the Dalkon Shield Class Action Suits.  Update finding aids for
the collections. Other duties as assigned.

Required skills-Qualifications:  Interest and background in history and library
experience helpful. Reading knowledge of foreign language preferred.

Hours:  Full-time for the summer.  Must be able to work between 9:00 a.m. and
5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

Hourly rate: $10.00 per hour



Job Title:  Special Collections Assistant - Two positions

Contact person:  David Ferris, Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts

Description of duties:

1. Assists in the reorganization of the Red Set, the Law Library's collection of
materials produced by the Schools programs, departments and offices; faculty
publications; and student theses and papers.

2. Creates and edits online bibliographic and holdings records for books,
manuscript, and typescript materials, at both item and collection levels.

3. Verifies and edits access points and headings following AACR2 standards and
in accordance with Library of Congress Name and Subject Authorities.

4. Organizes and shelves materials after cataloging.

5. Performs related duties as required.

Required skills/Qualifications:  College degree required.  Library or archival
experience preferred, preferably in rare books and special collections.
Knowledge of MARC preferred.  Competency in keyboarding and word processing
required.  Good communication and interpersonal skills required. Sensitivity to
proper care and handling of special collections material required.

Hours:  Full-time for the summer.  Must be able to work between 9:00 a.m. and
5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

Hourly rate:  $10.00 per hour

The Harvard Law Library is the world's largest academic law library. Its
collections, numbering approximately 1,400,000 volumes support the teaching and
research activities of the Law School and serve as a resource for legal
scholars.

The Special Collections Department oversees 250,000 rare books, two million
pages of manuscript materials, 300 oil paintings, 3,000 prints, 30,000
photographs and assorted statuary, antique furniture and realia.
