question about pests

I am just starting to do some weeding and organization of our archival
collection and have come across several things that I don't know what do
about. For example, we have several very old journals (ca. 1850) which have
tiny holes the size of a needle. Are these from bugs? Should I throw them
out? We also have several old journals with rust-colored spots inside the
covers. Is this possibly some kind of mold? Is there any online source
which could help me in figuring this stuff out?
