Re: How to Handle Old, Crumbling Newspapers?

In order to microfilm the newspapers, they must be opened. Judging by the description of condition, this could be a difficult task.

You might use the "garbage can" approach to introduce moisture:

Have garbage can with a couple of bricks in the bottom
        Put chicken wire over bricks
pour low level of water, up to half the height of bricks
        place newspapers on chicken wire
        cover with plastic bag
        check in 24 hours

If they cannot be unfolded after this amount of time, check every few hours.
they should then unfold fairly easily

Place in folders, weighted to prevent curling as papers dry.

They can then be microfilmed or photocopied.

Method developed by founder of the Northeast Document Conservation Center in andover, Massachusetts.

To make the newspapers "accessible" for reading, the best thing you can
do is microfilm them and then store the originals in acid-free folders
and boxes to be touched as little as possible. Loose clippings can be
interleaved with acid-free paper, or put in mylar sleeves if there are
only a few of them (and their value merits the extra preservation).
