THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY

The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and over 20 school and department libraries and
two low-use shelving facilities.  It employs a dynamic and innovative staff
of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber
of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in
other areas of staff development.  A full spectrum of library resources,
from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of
electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The
Library is engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of
the main library building, the complete conversion of the Library's
catalog, and various automation projects, which include network access to
scholarly information and digital preservation.

THE BEINECKE RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY
The Beinecke Library is Yale's principal repository for literary papers,
and early manuscripts and rare books. In addition to its distinguished
general collections, the library houses outstanding special collections
devoted to American literature, German literature, Western Americana, and
17th and 18th century British literary and cultural studies. For further

The Manuscript Unit is responsible for accessioning, processing,
cataloging, and conservation and preservation of the library's manuscript,
archival and non-print collections. The staff consists of the Unit Head, 4
fte Archivists, 3 fte Archives Assistants, student assistants, and special
project personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Manuscript Unit Head, processes collections of
American and modern European literary and historical manuscripts. Prepares
and maintains electronic finding aids according to established local
practice, including EAD encoding. Performs original cataloging in the MARC
format, using a Windows-based cataloger's workstation. Participates in the
ongoing retrospective conversion of the library's Manuscripts Card Catalog.
Assists with preservation, cataloging and digital conversion of sound
recordings, and movies and video, associated with manuscript and archival
collections.  Special projects as assigned. Plans, directs, and reviews the
work of processing assistants and student assistants. Is expected to be
active professionally.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: MLS or equivalent ALA-accredited degree, with formal training in
archival theory and practice. Working knowledge of the MARC format, LCSH,
AACR2, Hensen's APPM, and other LC cataloging standards. Familiarity with
automated library information management systems, such as NOTIS or RLIN.
Familiarity with basic preservation and conservation standards for archival
and manuscript collections, including historical audio collections.
Demonstrated knowledge of American or modern European literature or
history; broad knowledge in the humanities. Good reading knowledge of at
least one modern European language, preferably French or German. Facility
with microcomputers and basic software applications in a Windows
environment. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally
and in writing. Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to
detail. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a production
oriented, team environment.

Preferred:
· Experience processing and cataloging modern literary or historical
manuscripts and archival collections.
· Experience creating MARC records in the Mixed Materials or Visual
Materials format.
· Familiarity with MARC coding and national descriptive standards for
non-musical sound recordings or moving image formats.
· Reading knowledge of Polish or Spanish in addition to French or German.
· Two years of relevant professional experience.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
