Description

The Princeton University Library seeks nominations and applications for the position of William Seymour Theatre Collection Project Archivist.  The successful candidate will join the staff of one of the world?s premier research libraries, working in its Department of Rare Books and Special Collections.  The Department?s holdings span five millennia and as many continents and include some 200,000 rare or significant printed works, some 8,500 linear feet of textual materials, ranging from cuneiform tablets to contemporary manuscripts, and a wealth of prints, drawings, photographs, maps, coins, and other visual materials.  Approximately 40 professional and paraprofessional staff carry out the work of the Department.  Additional information can be found at http://www.princeton.edu/~rbsc/.

The William Seymour Theatre Collection, which is housed chiefly in the Harvey S. Firestone Memorial Library, encompasses over one hundred collections relating to the performing arts, including theater, dance, film, circus, and other popular forms of entertainment.  Materials date from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries and include the papers of individuals such as William Seymour, Richard Schechner, and Woody Allen; the records of organizations such as the early Barnum and Bailey Circus and McCarter Theatre; and playbills, posters, photographs, film stills, scripts, sheet music, and set and costume designs.
 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will establish physical and intellectual control over the Theatre Collection by appraising, arranging, describing, and preserving materials housed in the Firestone Library.  He or she will assess the relative strengths and needs of the Theatre Collection?s components and develop a plan for their short and long-term treatment in consultation with others.  The successful candidate will respond to inquiries concerning the Theatre Collection and instruct the staff of the Department in its use.  He or she will supervise several student assistants.

Required:  an ALA-Accredited Master?s degree in Library and Information Science or an equivalent combination of educational and professional experience; a minimum of one year?s experience in managing complex archival projects; a mastery of archival practices and principles, including the creation of bibliographic records, databases, and finding aids; excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills; and an ability to work well independently and in concert with others.

Desired: a degree or certificate in one of the performing arts; an historical and theoretical knowledge of the performing arts in the United States; a working knowledge of HTML and Microsoft Word and Access; and supervisory experience.
