A shift in fight to open records

by Robert Schwaneberg
One provision would have authorized the state to settle lawsuits against
government officials without ever telling taxpayers how much of their money
it paid out.
Another amendment would have given private lawyers working for the state or
local governments an easy way to hide their bills from public view.
One change restricted the release of computerized records.

by Tom Sowa
Washington officials canceled a contract Friday with a Texas firm that
allegedly sold state drivers' records illegally over the Internet.
Insurance Information Exchange of College Station, Texas, was one of four
firms under contract with the state to obtain Washington driver records and
sell the data to others.
Those sales are legal if the person requesting the record represents an
insurance company, an employer or drug or alcohol treatment agency.

SJC rules teacher discipline record is not public
http://www.bostonherald.com/news/local_regional/sjc06222000.htm

Associated Press
The state's highest court drew a veil over the personnel records of public
school teachers today, ruling that reports of disciplinary actions against
teachers don't have to be disclosed under the state's open records law.
The Supreme Judicial Court overruled the Massachusetts Appeals Court, which
had found the records public, saying that teachers held positions of
``special public trust'' and violations of that trust were ``not a personal
affair.''
The SJC noted that the state law that provides access to public records
includes 12 categories of records that don't have to be disclosed, including
``any personnel and medical files or information.''

DURHAM - The University of New Hampshire will announce the creation of the
Charles E. Holt Archives of American Hockey at Dimond Library on Monday at
2:30 p.m.
The archives will be housed at the newly-renovated Dimond Library and will
consist of records, photos, statistics and memorabilia from the world of
American hockey.
"I think it just says a lot for what he did for college hockey," said UNH
men's hockey coach Dick Umile about the tribute to legendary former Wildcat
hockey coach Charles E. Holt. "He is a great ambassador."
The American Hockey Coaches Association and the Hockey East Association have
already agreed to donate their records to the collection.
