ARCHIVES ROUNDTABLE OF METROPOLITAN NEW YORK
JUNE 2000 MEETING NOTICE: ALL ARE WELCOME

The American Jewish Historical Society: Reference Service in a unique
setting

The American Jewish Historical Society has entered a new and exciting phase
of its development. Founded in 1892, the Society was born in New York but
moved in 1968 to the campus of Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. While
the Society retains its Waltham facility, it has relocated its national
headquarters and the majority of its holdings to the new Center for Jewish
History, 15 W. 16th Street in New York.

The Society's archival, book, photo, newspaper and artifactual holdings make
it the largest repository chronicling the American Jewish experience. Its
new facilities provide state of the art preservation conditions. The Center
for Jewish History is a joint project of the American Jewish Historical
Society, YIVO, the Leo Baeck Institute, the Yeshiva University Museum and
the American Sephardi Federation.

The program will include a tour of portions of the Center, a brief overview
of the Society's holdings and a discussion by its executive director on the
challenges and opportunities of collaborative activity in a
multi-institutional facility.

The Center's Reading Room, the focus of its research and reference services,
has been open to the public for six months. The complexities of a shared
facility have been tested. Lyn Slome, Associate and Photo Archivist for the
American Jewish Historical Society will present some examples in the ongoing
nature, and practical application of library and archival reference ideals
and services in this setting.
