manuscript copyright information

There is an interesting article in the 15 June 2000 issue of _Library
Journal_ (p. 38 -40) called "Do Your Manuscripts Have a Y2K+3
Problem," about manuscripts, copyright, and January 1, 2003. The
article is written by Kenneth D. Crews, a copyright expert who
recently conducted an e-mail copyright tutorial for the American
Library Association. It discusses the complexities of manuscript
copyrights, and also the dilemma of a library or archive that includes
a manuscript (or MS collection) that might soon pass into the public
domain, so long as it is not published--and whether such institutions
should be very quiet about such collections to keep heirs of the
original copyright holder from publishing them and adding another 45
years to their copyright protection!
