Photographer 1

The Maine State Archives is seeking to fill a Photographer 1 position, to
start work on or about September 11, 2000.  This is technical services work
in exposing and processing films and prints for government purposes, and in
preservation microfilming to archival standards.  Work is performed under
general supervision.  This position's primary purpose is to provide
photographic (both traditional silver film and digital) copies of materials
from the holdings of the Maine State Archives.  Duties also include creating
preservation microfilm to reduce wear and tear on permanently valuable
records, processing microfilm to archival standards, and duplicating
microfilm.  The Photographer I will also be expected to participate in the
agency's educational programs for historical societies, libraries, and other
repositories of historic documents.

The successful candidate must have knowledge of photographic equipment,
darkroom techniques and materials used in both black and white photography
and color photography.  Must have knowledge of or be willing to learn
preservation microfilming and film processing skills.

Minimum qualifications are two (2) years experience in commercial or news
photography which includes some experience in technical photographic and
darkroom work, or equivalent photography experience in an archives or
manuscript repository setting.  Additional (desirable) qualifications
include education, experience and/or training in photographic preservation,
management of collections, and creating and processing microfilm to meet
archival standards.  The position requires some public speaking, and the
ability to prepare instructional materials suitable for adult education.

Full State benefits, salary $20,072 to $26,395.20
Value of State paid benefits and dental insurance :  $190.84 bi-weekly
Value of State share of employee retirement contributions:  17.98% of salary
