Re: compact disc longevity

What is AIC?

The most honest answer is that nobody really knows, since they haven't been around that long.... but it seems clear that there are a number of variables that effect it. Stamped (commercial) CDs are usually rated the shortest lifespan (mass produced, use aluminum). The recordable CDs that use gold for the metal platter in the center are rated the longest (75-300). The ones using silver are rated about 30-100. The other main factors are the stability of the dye and the quality of the lacquer coating that protects it. What is recorded matters as well. How much use and handling they get is important. A CDR sitting in the dark in its little case deteriorates much more slowly than a magnetic tape. Careful use does not hurt it either, whereas the wear of playing a tape is noticeable.
