Re: Archives in the movies

Well, I knew it was going to happen, so now I must step to the defense of
those of us "in the industry." As a producer of documentaries with a solid
background in collections and public history, I've met my fair share of
"industry" people who had a lot more veneration for history (accuracy and
artifact) and a whole lot more concern for getting it out to the public than
many of those I met in my former (well, somewhat former) life.

I could, of course, go on and on with lists of entirely unprofessional acts
by historians and archivists from organizations of all shapes and sizes...
I'm not going to - mainly because (like their film industry counterparts)
they probably aren't on this list. But also, because it is very
unproductive - I'd rather spend my time, as many of us in both industries
do, spreading the good (and bad) word of our historical past.

Finally, I ask you all to remember - it's a film folks! Not history! Spread
the word: Get your history from History books, get your entertainment from
movies.

That said (with a grin), as a New Yorker I can't believe they made a film
about the Revolution that didn't center where most of the important battles
were fought!

Have a good holiday all,

Not to offend anyone on the list who might be in the industry, but there
seems to be an "anything for the production" mindset among
film/documentary/movie producers that allows them to do unto others as they
might not particularly wish to be done unto.
