Project Archivist -- Two-year Position

The Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library has an
opening for an archivist to
process the manuscript collection of R. Lee Clark, M.D. This collection
(ca 250 linear ft.) contains
personal papers, photographs, records from organizations, sections of
manuscripts from professional
associates, and printed documents related to the development of the
Texas Medical Center in
Houston, Texas. This collection, when processed, will be one of the core
resources for research on
the history of Houston's health care institutions and biomedical
research programs.

This job will include arrangement and description of this twentieth
century collection, preparation of
both printed and online finding aids, selection of materials to be
scanned, and preparation of a small
exhibit at the close of the project. This is a two-year position funded
by a grant from the Friends of
the Texas Medical Center Library.

This position requires a Master's degree in Archives/American Studies,
History, or Library Science
and excellent writing skills. Preference will be given to individuals
with experience in the history of
medicine or with experience in archival work. The successful candidate
must be familiar with or learn
to successfully use word processing software and the Library's online
catalog system. Training will
be provided on scanning images. Physical requirements for the job
include lifting archival boxes to
shoulder height for shelving, pushing carts loaded with heavy boxes, and
good eye-hand coordination
for handling fragile materials.

The successful candidate will work in the John P. McGovern Historical
Collections & Research
Center, a dynamic department of three individuals with dissimilar
backgrounds. Current McGovern
Center projects include the enhancement of its web page, scanning images
of Texas hospitals,
development of a digital library on Texas medical history, acquisition
of new book and archival
collections, and reference services to a varied clientele. The HAM-TMC
Library is one of the largest
health sciences libraries in the United States. ( http://library.tmc.edu
) Located in the Texas Medical
Center, it serves two medical schools, three nursing schools, and six
major hospitals.

Starting salary is $35,000 and is commensurate with experience. Fringe
benefits include medical,
dental and life insurance. TIAA/CREF retirement plan is available and
there are twenty-four paid
vacation days per year. Interviewing for the position will begin
September 1, 2000 and continue until
the position is filled. Send letter of application, resume and names of
references to: Zina Hayes,
