Architect query....Reply

Mr. Mc Coy,
Unfortunately, the architects of the Starrett-Lehigh Building: Russell G., and Walter M. Cory are not considered major architects (though you won't want to mention that fact in your historic structures report!) Consequently you will not have much luck finding materials relating to them in mid-sized collections of "architecture in general" scattered in miscellaneous locations. You will have better results in either the largest, most comprehensive architectural collections such as the Avery Architectural Library at Columbia University in New York, or at a smaller, more localized repository closer to where these architects practiced. To answer that last question, please refer to:

Biographical dictionary of American architects (deceased) / by Henry F. Withey & Elsie Rathburn Withey.
Detroit : Omnigraphics, 1996
ISBN: 0780800435

Because the Starrett-Lehigh Building is a Designated New York City Landmark, you may meet with ultimate success at the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. A legal requirement of the designation process is the production of a Designation Report which always includes; (if known) biographical information about the architect(s) under review and a survey of their built works. You will also want to know that Yasuo Matsui (partner of Craig Severance, and designer of the Bank of the Manhattan Building at 40 Wall St.) was the associated architect for that building. Here is the address and url of the Commission:

Ask for the current Director of Information to assist you. The Commission is very willing to share their designation reports particularly since you require the information in order to save an important work of architecture by the same firm in another city.

Lastly, it may be helpful for you to locate the article about the Starrett-Lehigh Building and it's architects written by the architectural historian, Christopher Gray which appeared in his "Streetscapes" column in the Sunday New York Times Real Estate Section about six months ago. This article may provide you with more useful leads.
Good luck in saving the building. Please contact me off the list if you would like me to write in support of this building's preservation.

Subject: [ARCHIVES] Architect Query
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 15:10:53 -0400

Can anyone provide me with biographical information and/or point me to
the repository that holds the papers of architect Walter Monroe Corey?
Corey designed the 1931 Starrett-Lehigh Warehouse in the Chelsea
District of Manhattan, a registered NYC landmark. 221 miles away in
Silver Spring, Maryland, his 1946 art deco Canada Dry Bottling Plant is
being threatened with demolition. The Silver Spring Historical Society
is attempting to prevent this by compiling as much information as we can
about Corey and Canada Dry. Thank you.
