ECURE 2000 Keynote Selected

Officials at Arizona State University announced today that Clifford A. Lynch will give the keynote address for the ECURE 2000 conference, to be held October 5th and 6th in the Phoenix metropolitan area. His rare combination of technical experience and contextual awareness enables him to provide a unique perspective on the challenges of record keeping for colleges and universities.

Lynch is the Executive Director of the Coalition for Networked Information, which seeks to facilitate development of information technology and networked information applications that enhance scholarship and intellectual productivity. The coalition includes approximately 200 member organizations.

Lynch holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He currently serves on the Internet 2 Applications Council, and the National Research Council Committee on Intellectual Property in the Emerging Information Infrastructure. Prior to joining CNI, Lynch spent 18 years at the University of California Office of the President, the last 10 as Director of Library Automation. There, he managed the MELVYL information system and the intercampus internet for the university. He is a past president of the American Society for Information Science and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

To remain competitive in the information society, colleges and universities will need to efficiently manage electronic documents and records. The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for the dissemination and critical evaluation of very current research and development projects, evaluate existing or needed information policies, and begin the interdisciplinary dialogue necessary to identify solutions and best practices.

This year's conference sessions will once again bring together a unique blend of experts from a number of professional disciplines who are knowledgeable in management of electronic information. Highlights of the sessions will include: access to electronic records and personal privacy; ownership of electronic data; establishing an electronic records management program; distance education learning materials; the state and federal regulatory environment; and legal and ethical issues. The conference has limited registration and offers unparalleled access to the experts through post-presentation small group discussion sessions.
