ABOLINS NAMED DIRECTOR OF MEDIA ARCHIVES AND PEABODY AWARDS COLLECTION AT
UGA LIBRARIES

ATHENS, Ga. ? Ruta Abolins has been named director of the Media Archives
and Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia Libraries.
An archivist, Abolins has been acting director head of the department for
several months, succeeding Linda Tadic who has joined the Getty Museum.
The Media Archives is one of the largest broadcasting archives in the
country and includes more than 90,000 television and radio programs, 5
million feet of newsfilm, folk music field tapes and home movies. The
Peabody Awards Collection is the keystone of the collection, containing
virtually every entry submitted for this prestigious award, and constitutes
one of the foremost and most diverse sound and moving images collections in
the world.
Abolins joined the UGA Libraries in July of 1998. She is a member of the
board of directors of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, a
professional organization dedicated to the education and sharing of
information on preservation, cataloging and management of moving image
collections. With nine years of experience in reference, cataloging,
appraisal and management of film and television collections, Abolins has
extensive research skills and knowledge of film and television history.
?Ruta Abolins brings great energy and enthusiasm to this position and we are
most pleased to offer this position to someone who already possesses
extensive familiarity with our collections,? said William Gray Potter,
university librarian. ?I am
sure our students and research scholars who avail themselves of the
resources here will benefit from her expertise.?
Her appointment will be effective July 15, pending approval from the Board
of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
Prior to joining the UGA Libraries, Abolins was a film archivist with the
Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research for eight years. She holds
master?s degrees in Library and Information Studies, from the University of
Wisconsin, and in popular culture, from Bowling Green State University. She
earned a bachelor?s of fine arts from the University of Wisconsin at
Milwaukee.
?My excitement at being able to work with this collection was only magnified
when I was asked to be acting department head earlier this year,? Abolins
said. ?This has been a challenging and invigorating experience and I look
forward to its continuation.?
