Dublin Core Metadata Element Set: Comments requested

SAA's Technical Subcommittee on Descriptive Standards has been asked to
comment formally on a draft NISO standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.85-200x) which
identifies, defines, and explains 15 metadata elements required for resource
discovery in a multidisciplinary information environment. The element set
has been developed, beginning in 1995, by a group of librarians, digital
library researchers, content providers, and text mark-up experts to improve
discovery standards for information resources. For archivists, a primary
value is to better enable Web search agents to locate and identify
electronic finding aids to archival materials.

The text of the proposed standard is on the NISO website at this url:

http://www.niso.org/Z3985.html

TSDS will send its review comments to NISO in early August, but is
interested in opening up the critique to a wider archival community. If you
care to make any comments on the draft, please direct them either to this
List or to me ( dennis.meissner@mnhs.org), as seems appropriate.

Chair, SAA TSDS
