MAS Open Forum in Denver
OPEN FORUM: REVIEW OF THE MAS GUIDELINES
The Society of American Archivists' Committee on Professional Education
and
Development is holding an Open Forum at the Denver annual meeting as part
of
an ongoing review of the Guidelines for the Development of a Curriculum
for
a Master of Archival Studies Degree. This Forum is scheduled for
Wednesday,
August 30 from 1-4 pm.
Graduate education guidelines are an important means of defining what
qualifications are needed to become a professional archivist. The review
of
these educational guidelines will affect all members of the profession in
coming years, both those preparing for careers in the field and also
those
who will be hiring graduates of archival education programs. The Open
Forum
will provide an opportunity to consider the present guidelines and to
make
recommendations for possible revisions. All SAA members and others
interested in this issue are encouraged to attend.
In order to provide a current context for this discussion, the Forum will
feature brief presentations by three highly respected SAA leaders, former
presidents Brenda Banks and John Fleckner, and former SAA education
officer
Timothy Ericson. The three speakers will present their perspectives on
the
future of the profession, on graduate archival education, and on the
current
education guidelines. These presentations will be followed by an open
discussion of the current guidelines and possible recommendations for
modifications.
Please review the MAS guidelines (posted at
www.archivists.org/prof-education/masguide.html
<http://www.archivists.org/prof-education/masguide.html> ) and bring your
comments and concerns to the Forum.
Following the SAA annual meeting, CEPD will continue to seek comments and
suggestions regarding the MAS guidelines. Information will be provided to
SAA members and other interested persons through publications and internet
postings. Any and all comments are welcome. For further information, please

guidelines, at rand.jimerson@wwu.edu <mailto:rand.jimerson@wwu.edu> , or
