Re: Artifacts and historical perspective

Slightly off the subject, but did you hear the NPR Weekend Saturday Edition
about the Archimedes Palimpsest. It was totally fascinating and I could
have listened to more!

I do not normally reply to anything in this listserv but I would like to
say that I really liked this short piece on artifacts and historical
perspective. I find it very interesting to see how different people -and
this includes over time- discuss an era based on written or archeological
information and/or artifacts and they all come up with a different
conclusion or interpretation of that era or in many cases an event.
I grew up in Williamsburg (in the 50s) and the way the history of that town
and the "facts" that are used now are a far cry from what was done then.
Not that the actual and basic thrust is not the same but interpretation in
books, at museums and at other historical places does vary with time and a
change in how people look at things.
That is one reason that archivists have jobs, so that people interested in
"looking" at a different time can do so through the materials of that time.
It is a good idea to encourage that but at the same time to incourage a
more balanced view than some we see.
Well that is my two cents for the year. Hope everyone is having a great
summer and keeping out of the heat.
