   POSITION: Library Specialist (#J002080). Range: 1A3 (B14). Non-exempt. Posted:

   DESCRIPTION: Under the direction and supervision of the Special Collections
         Librarian for Manuscript Processing, the Special Collections Specialist
         will be responsible for the arrangement and description of manuscript and
         archival collections primarily relating to American and British literary
         figures. The Specialist will: Determine the intellectual arrangement and
         description of manuscript and archival collections, including series and
         sub-series, in consultation with the Special Collections Librarian for
         Manuscripts Processing 2. Organize work flows to ensure efficient
         physical processing and arrangement of manuscript and archival
         collections, including rehousing of material, for which position is
         responsible. Identify and sequester confidential materials in the
         manuscript and archival collections and routinely consult with the
         Special Collections Librarian for Manuscripts Processing and the Head of
         the Department to ensure that established procedures to restrict access
         to these items is followed. 4. Weed inappropriate materials from archival
         and manuscripts collections and either destroy them or return them to the
         donor of the collection, according to the agreement in the Deed of Gift /
         Sales Agreement and/or in consultation with the Special Collections
         Librarian for Manuscripts Processing as appropriate. 5. Create
         appropriate access tools to collections including computerized databases,
         traditional finding aids, and electronic finding aids marked up in EAD
         according to established principles, consulting with the cognizant
         curator as appropriate. Create RLIN AMC catalog records for archival and
         manuscript collections according to national standards (AACR II, APPM).
         7. Identify items requiring conservation treatment and assist in the
         execution of any appropriate treatment plan. 8. Supervise student
         assistants in conjunction with, and particularly in the absence of, the
         Special Collections Librarian for Manuscripts Processing. 9. Serve as an
         Expert Partner to provide general computer support to colleagues within
         the Department (approximately 4 hours per week). Salary range: $
         2625-3158.

   QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated knowledge of special collections departments and
         their procedures, including the use of on-line library catalogues,
         on-line databases, and traditional finding aids; familiarity with
         scholarly use of primary research materials; previous experience in
         processing manuscript or archival collections; demonstrated knowledge of
         advanced library operational skills; ability to work in assigned areas
         with little supervision, to apply judgment in evaluating established
         alternatives, and to manage technical and human relations matters;
         competence in personal computer applications including word processing
         and database creation and management. Requirements: An undergraduate
         degree or equivalent, with significant coursework in literary studies;
         Demonstrated experience in using judgment and initiative to analyze and
         recommend new procedures; demonstrated understanding of security concerns
         in a special collections department is required; demonstrated ability to
         communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
