Title: The Flames of Plenty: The Archaeology of Forest Management

Speaker: Dr. Eric Johnson

Summary:
In the seventeenth century, European travelers described Native American
forest management in Massachusetts. Native Americans used fire to create
environments where important and useful animals and plants could thrive.
Archaeological research combined with studies of the ancient environments of
western Massachusetts shows that this practice goes back as much as 4,000
years.

Bio:
Eric Johnson is an archaeologist and preservation planner with the
Massachusetts Historical Commission. He earned his doctorate from the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1993 and has been a practicing
professional archaeologist in Massachusetts for more than 20 years.
