Archives Closed for Remodeling - January 2001

STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF WISCONSIN

THE ARCHIVES WILL BE CLOSED FOR REMODELING

The Archives Reading Room, Visual Materials Archive Viewing Room, and Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research will be closed for remodeling during all of January 2001. Services will resume in a new Archives Reference Room on February 1, 2001.

During January, Archives staff will continue to respond to written reference questions regarding the holdings mentioned above. Send mail to Archives Reference, 816 State Street, Madison, Wisconsin 53706. E-mail may be sent to archref@mail.shsw.wisc.edu Likewise, the Archives will continue to transfer collections to our regional Area Research Centers during the closure period. For more information on the ARC Network, center locations and hours of operation, see our website: www.shsw.wisc.edu/archives/arcnet/index.html

Library reference services and access at the Historical Society will be unaffected.

To improve reference service, the Archives Division of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin is consolidating three reference points into one unit. The Archives will close its onsite reference service for the month of January 2001 in order to remodel. This closure covers reference and access to manuscript collections, state and local government records, maps, and rare books normally used in the Archives Reading Room; photographs, films, posters and other graphic materials normally used in the Visual Materials Archive; and films, posters, and photographs normally used in the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research (WCFTR).

This one-month closure of onsite reference services is made necessary by remodeling of the old Archives Reading Room to make way for unified archival reference service in a newly refurbished Reference Room. In the past, patrons have been served by three separate Archives reference units for textual materials, visual materials, and WCFTR film and television collections. When the new Reference Room opens on February 1, 2001 patrons interested in original source materials will be served in one location regardless of format or media.

We believe that this new unified reference program will provide the public with better, more comprehensive service than the former three separate reference units.
