Re: proper storage for 16mm film

Gaylord sells both vented plastic cans and archival film cores. The
Association of Moving Image Archivists list or web page might have
suggestions for further or better suppliers that specialize in archival film
containers.

As for transferring it back to reels for payback, it depends on the type of
machine you're using. If you're projecting the film, typically you'll need
it on a reel. This is, of course, not a recommended form of playback. A
viewer or a flatbed editor usually uses cores. Regardless, it is better to
store the film on evenly wound cores. Reels tend to rust and they can cause
warping and edge damage.

I am interested in this information, too, since I am in the midst of a
similar project myself. I have heard of putting film on cores and then
putting that into acid-free boxes, but I wondered if the film would need to
be put back on a reel to play it (should that need to be done on a very rare
occasion - please down pounce on me for that!). :)
