Major Duties:

Assist the staff of the Historic Documents Department in identifying,
preserving, and describing archival records relating to maritime history.
This includes a wide range of textual records, photographs, and
architectural records.  Assists with the surveying and inventory of
records, arranging and housing them, and preparing finding aids. Uses NPS
automated cataloging system, national online bibliographical systems,
databases, word processing, and other automated tools, to catalog and
manage archival collections.  Uses national archival standards for data
structures (MARC, EAD), data contents (APPM) and data elements (LCSH, AAT).
Enters data into systems.  Assist with proper maintenance, and control of
archival holdings. Provides proper storage for historic documents, and
assists with basic preservation treatments. Monitors environmental
factors.  Performs research necessary to classify, authenticate, value, and
describe historic documents and to answer staff or public inquiries.
Assists with inquiries from staff and public. Prepares photocopies to
respond to inquiries. Assists with special projects such as microfilming,
digitizing, or research projects
in maritime history.  Provides support for departmental administration and
daily operations.

Qualifications Required:  For GS-9: 1 year of specialized experience
equivalent to at least next lower grade level.

Specialized Experience:  Experience that equipped the applicant with the
particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA') to perform successfully
the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the
position to be filled.  To be creditable, specialized experience must have
been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.  Applicants who
have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, are not required by
this standard to have general experience, education above the high school
level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum
qualification requirements.


Knowledges, Skills, and Ablities (KSA's) Required:

1.  Knowledge  of archival methods and procedures.

2.  Knowledge of the application of information technologies to archival
descriptions, management, and reference services, and the implementation of
national standards for data structures, data contents, and data values.

3.  Knowledge of methods and procedures for preserving records.

4.  Knowledge of one of the following subject areas: history, social
sciences, arts, technology, or history or records-creating and records-
keeping systems, preferably specialization in the maritime aspects of these
subject areas.

5.  Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing.

Note: Credit will be given for all qualifying experience regardless of
whether compensation was received or whether the experience was gained as a
part-time or full-time occupation.  Full-time work is generally considered
to be 35 to 40 hours of work per week.  Part-time experience will be
credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.  To
receive credit for such experience, applicants must indicate clearly the
nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number
of hours per week spent in such employment.

SPECIAL SELECTION PRIORITY PROVISIONS FOR DISPLACED FEDERAL EMPLOYEES UNDER
THE CAREER TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PLAN (CTAP) OR INTERAGENCY CAREER
TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PLAN (ICTAP).

--Individuals who have special priority selection rights under the CTAP or
ICTAP programs must be well qualified for the position to receive
consideration for special priority selection. CTAP and ICTAP eligibles will
be considered well qualified if they obtain a score of '85,' NOT INCLUDING
VETERANS PREFERENCE.

--Federal employees seeking CTAP/ICTAP eligibility must submit proof that
they meet the requirements of 5 CFR 330.605(A) for CTAP AND 5 CFR 330.704
for  ICTAP.  This includes a copy of the agency notice, a copy of their
most recent performance rating and a copy of their most recent SF-50 noting
current position, grade level, and duty location. Please annotate your
application to reflect that you are applying as a CTAP or ICTAP eligible.


Basis of Rating:

No written test is required.  All candidates will be evaluated based upon
their written description of work experience and/or education completed.
Candidates who meet the minimum experience and/or education requirements as
described above will be ranked based upon their possession of the
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities (KSAs) listed above.  To receive full
consideration, candidates should submit a narrative statement on a separate
page(s) with specific responses to each of the KSAs.  Provide clear,
concise examples for each KSA listed.
Relate your experience to the position for which you are applying.
Use examples which show the depth of knowledge, level of skill, or degree
of ability you have.  Failure to submit narrative responses may result in
candidates not receiving full credit for their experience/education.

Conditions of Employment:

--Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify that they have

--A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a
background security investigation and favorable adjudication.  Failure to

The Defense Authorization Act of November 18, 1997, grants preference to
anyone who was released from the service under honorable conditions and

during the Gulf War (from August 2, 1990, through January 2, 1992,

have served the full period for which called to active duty)).  The law
also authorizes the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in Bosnia
during Operation Joint Endeavor (November 20, 1995 - December 20, 1996) and
Operation Joint Guard (December 20, 1996 - to be determined).  The
Secretary of each military department will decide which members are
eligible.  The award of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal is qualifying
