Remembering that OAH-Friendly Debate. No Flames!

Actually, the only difference between OAH and SAA is that Adams Mark settled
only a week before the OAH conference allowing no time to return to Adams
Mark.

SAA's Jan. 30 Council statement at
http://www.archivists.org/statements/adams_mark_resolution.htm : WHEREAS it
is the policy of the Society of American Archivists:

    "Because discrimination and unequal treatment are inimical to the
Society's goals, SAA hereby declares that discrimination on the grounds of
race, color, creed, gender,
    national origin, age, marital status, family relationship, individual
life style, and disability is prohibited within the Society. SAA will
vigorously pursue a policy of
    non-discrimination and equal opportunity through its programs,
activities, services, operations, employment, and business contracts."
(Approved by Council, January
    1992)

 WHEREAS the Adam's Mark hotel chain has been charged by the U.S. Department
of Justice with engaging in a pattern of discrimination against minorities
in their hotels;

 THEREFORE the Society of American Archivists resolves that if either the
Adam's Mark fails to reach a corrective settlement with the Department of
Justice or is found guilty of
 discrimination, the Society will refrain from conducting any of its future
activities on the properties of the Adam's Mark Hotel chain.

 Approved by the Council of the Society of American Archivists, January 30,
2000
The statement refers to future activities as opposed to future contracts;
meaning it could have included the Denver 2K conference. Although somewhat
ambiguous, and probably deliberately so, this was interpreted by many to
mean activities already planned, i.e. Denver 2K. SAA in fact went so far as
to make a substantial effort to make alternative lodging available, an
effort beyond the ordinary.

In short, the difference between OAH and SAA could be summed up in these
words:

OAH had the misfortune to have reached the point of no return with respect
to annual conference planning at the time of the Justice Dept settlement.
SAA had the advantage of having their annual conference five months after
the settlement (as opposed to OAH's one week's notice).
