I am new to the list and not really an audio/video specialist but I did ask
our resident AV guy if he knew anything about it.

While he didn't know specifics, he suggested you could treat it the way he
would film using a set of film rewinds and cleaner and slowly, s-l-o-l-y
pull the tape through thoroughly letting it evaporate and dry before
respooling it.  Otherwise he referred me to TASCAM, TEAC Professional
Division.  I don't have up-to-date address info but the older is 7733
Telegraph Rd, Montebello CA, (213) 726-0303, or you might try contacting one
of the audio tape manufacturers (FUJI, AMPEX, 3-M, ect.)
