help re:flat file cabinets!

8/25/00

Hello to my fellow listservers, including my friends in Ohio and
Pennsylvania!

I have recently started working as an archivist, am in the process of
getting advice on flat file cabinets, and would primarily like answers to
three questions:

--Who is the best manufacturer, ideally for both archival stability
(especially regarding off-gassing) and for durability with regards to
weight-bearing capacity and drawer movement over time?

--Is it correct to assume that there is no risk of off-gassing from certain
types of cabinets after six months or so? [This is with the idea of buying
them, leaving them empty until any such risk has passed and then using
them.]

--Can you recommend an article, criteria/guidelines statement (e.g., from
SAA, National Archives, etc.) which offers what could be considered the
authoritative statement at present on what to look for in a cabinet you're
considering?

Thanks so much!
