MUSEUMS, HISTORIC HOUSES, ETC.


Black American West Museum & Heritage Center.
3901 California Street, Denver.  (303) 292-2566.  Hours 10AM ? 2PM
Wednesday thru Friday; noon ? 5 PM Saturday and Sunday.  Through
photographs, artifacts, clothing and oral histories, the exhibits tell
the story of Black pioneers. (Take Light Rail, 30th Avenue, stops right
in front of museum)

Buffalo Bill?s Grave and Museum.
Top of Lookout Mountain, Exit 256 from Interstate 70, Golden.
(303) 526-0747.  Hours 9AM ? 4PM Tuesday thru Sunday.  Museum provides a
look at his life from Pony Express rider and buffalo hunter to world?s
greatest showman.

Byers-Evans House.
1310 Bannock Street, Denver.  (303) 620-4933.  Hours 11AM ? 3PM Tuesday
thru Sunday.  Built by Rocky Mountain News publisher William Byers in
1883.  Then tour Denver History Museum adjacent to the house.  Free with
SAA name badge.

Children?s Museum of Denver.
Interstate 25 at 23rd Avenue (Exit 211), Denver.  (303) 433-7444.  Hours
10AM ?
5 PM Tuesday thru Sunday.  Interactive ?playscapes? where children can
explore.  Includes Alphabet Soup (a play area), Maze-eum at the Museum,
Inventions and a Children?s Theatre.

Colorado History Museum.
13th and Broadway, Denver.  (303) 866-3682.  Hours 10AM to 4:30PM Monday
thru Saturday; noon to 4:30PM Sunday.  Illustrates Colorado?s history
(Indians, gunfighters, wagon trains, mining, railroads, sodbusters, gold
panners, and explorers through dioramas, exhibits, photographs and
artifacts.  Free with SAA name badge.  (Cultural Connection Trolley)



Denver Art  Museum.
13th and Acoma Streets, Denver.  (303) 640-4433.  Hours 10AM ? 5PM
Tuesday thru Saturday; 10AM ? 9PM Wednesday; noon ? 5PM Sunday.  Has
over 40,000 works of art.  Specialties include Native American gallery
(17,000 objects), the New World Gallery (5,000 items) of pre-Columbian
and Spanish Colonial art.  Gift shop and restaurant.   (Cultural

Denver Museum of Natural History and IMAX Theater.
2001 Colorado Blvd., Denver.  (303) 370-6357.  Hours 9AM ? 5PM Sunday
thru Wednesday; 9AM ? 7PM Thursday thru Saturday.  Fourth largest museum
of its kind in the nation.  Dinosaur bones.  Rare gems and minerals.
Egyptian mummies.  80 dioramas that depict animals from around the
world.  (Cultural Connection Trolley)

Mizel Museum of Judaica.
560 S. Monaco Parkway, Denver.  (303) 333-4156.  Hours 10AM ? 4PM
weekdays; noon ? 4PM Sunday.  Closed on Saturday.  History of Pioneering
Jews of Colorado.  Ritual and religious artifacts.  (main exhibits
closed until Sept. 29)

Museo de las Americas.
861 Santa Fe Drive, Denver.  (303) 571-4401.  Hours  Tues thru Sat 10AM
? 5PM.  Focuses on the art, history and culture of Latinos in the
Americas from ancient times to present.  From Aug 25 thru December, the
museum will have an exhibit ?Diego Rivera:  The Mural Drawings.?

?Unsinkable? Molly Brown House.
1340 Pennsylvania, Denver.  Hours 10AM ? 3PM Tuesday thru Saturday; noon
to 3PM Sunday.  She entered folklore when she survived the sinking of
the Titanic, showing great heroism in her life boat.  Molly and her
husband J.J. Brown struck it rich in the gold rush at Leadville and
moved to Denver to enjoy a lavish lifestyle.

Butterfly Pavilion and Insect Center.
6252 W. 104th Avenue, Westminster.  Hours daily 9AM ? 5 PM.  Nation?s
only stand-alone insect zoo, covers 5 acres.  Has over 1,200
butterflies.

Colorado?s Ocean Journey Aquarium.
700 Water Street, Denver.  (303) 561-4450.  Hours 9AM ? 6PM.  Opened
June 1999.  More than 15,000 fish, plants and mammals.

Colorado State Capitol.
200 E. Colfax Ave. (Colfax and Broadway), Denver.  (303) 866-2604.
Hours 9:30AM to 2:30PM Monday thru Friday.  (Cultural Connection
Trolley)
Coors Brewery.
13th and Ford Streets, Golden.  (303)277-BEER.  Hours 10AM to 4PM.
Brewery opened in 1873 by Adolph Coors and today it is the third largest
manufacturer of beer.  The Golden site is the largest single brewing
site in the world.

Denver Botanic Gardens.
909 York Street, Denver.  (303) 331-4000.  Hours 9AM ? 5PM daily.  Has
more than 15,000 species of plants on 23 acres.  (Cultural Connection

Denver Public Library.
10 W. 14th Avenue Parkway (at Broadway), Denver.  Hours 10AM-9PM M-W,
10AM-5:30PM Th-Sa, 1-5PM Su.  Opened in 1995.  Has 47 miles of
bookshelves and 5 million items, and is one of the largest libraries in
the U.S.  Highpoints include the Gates Western History Room and the
Western Art Gallery.  (Cultural Connection Trolley)

Denver Zoo.
23rd Avenue between Colorado and York Streets, Denver.  (303) 376-4800.
Hours April thru September 9AM ? 6 PM daily.  Has more than 3500
animals, representing 685 species.  Highlights include Primate Panorama
and Tropical Discovery.  (Cultural Connection Trolley)

Dinosaur Ridge.
16831 W. Alameda Parkway, Morrison.  (303) 697-3466.  Hours 9AM ? 4PM
Monday thru Saturday; noon ? 4PM Sunday.  Located 12 miles west of
Denver.  Ridge is the site where the world?s first large dinosaur bones
were discovered.  Designated as a National Natural Landmark that
preserves over 300 dinosaur footprints.

Six Flags Elitch Gardens Theme Park.
2000 Elitch Circle, Denver.  (303) 595-4386.  Hours 10AM ? 10 PM daily.
Is really two parks in one:  an amusement park with 48 rides and a water
theme park with a variety of water rides.

U. S. Mint.
West Colfax and Cherokee Streets, Denver.  (303) 405-4761.  Hours 8AM to
2:45PM.  Tours approximately every 20 minutes.  Facility produces over
10 billion coins every year.  Restored historic building.
