Interim Archivist
        K. Ross Toole Archives

The Mansfield Library seeks an Interim Archivist, with a rank of Visiting
Instructor, for the period October 2000 - June 2001.  Position is
three-quarter time (.75 FTE), non-renewable, on a non-tenure track
appointment.

Description of Position

The Mansfield Library of The University of Montana is seeking qualified
applicants for the position of Interim Archivist.  The Interim Archivist
would be responsible for supervising and performing reference services to
on-site and remote users; supervising and performing collection
processing, including submitting catalog records to the National Union
Catalog of Manuscript Collections; bibliographic instruction to University
of Montana students; supervision of Archives Technician (0.5 FTE) and
Archives Clerk (0.33 FTE); limited outreach and publicity; and some
minimal collection development. Reference services are performed in
cooperation with the Special Collections, Government Documents, and Maps
Departments. The Interim Archivist reports to the Director of Public
Services as a member of the Public Services Division.

Qualifications:
        ALA-accredited MLS with archival coursework or MA in American
History or related field with emphasis or certificate in archival
management. Individuals who have completed all degree coursework but are
finishing thesis work will be considered.
        Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills in
interacting with colleagues, administrators, staff, patrons and donors.
        Demonstrated ability to perform physical activities associated
with the archival environment, i.e. tolerance for working around dust and
dirt; ability to move boxes and materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a
regular basis and to reach, climb, kneel, crouch, and balance in
performance of job duties.
        Experience in computer applications for archival work; knowledge
of computer cataloging using MARC format is preferred.

Salary for this three-quarter time position is $19,293 for ten months.
Full benefit package includes medical, dental, life & long-term disability
insurance, and sick leave accrual.

The University of Montana
The K. Ross Toole Archives collects materials relating to western Montana;
collection strengths include the forest products industry, Montana writers
and journalists, Montana business, Montana politicians, and the University
of Montana. Collections total approximately 13,000 linear feet of archives
and manuscripts; 70,000 photographs; and 2,000 oral histories.

The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library occupies a five-story structure and
comprises the heart of UM's library system.   Holdings include over
1,000,000 volumes distributed on five levels in the humanities, sciences,
social sciences disciplines as well as extensive collections of media and
music materials, periodicals, maps, and U.S. Government documents.  In
addition to local holdings,  access to current periodical literature from
over 100 electronic databases is available.  Interlibrary loan supplements
the collection offering access to information worldwide.  The Mansfield
Library employs 16 librarians and 51 FTE support staff.  More detailed
