Re: Baptism Gowns in the 1860s

You are right. Small newborn have worn white gowns and white bonnets during
Baptism.
I don't think that it was any specific requirement to have a certain type of
gown or outfit for 6-8 year old child. I would say that in the Catholic
Church it would be a nice white dress for a girl, and a bonnet, and maybe
short dark pants and white blouse, and additional dark jacket for a boy.
But both, girl or boy could wear in some cases longer white gown. I do not
have any written source confirming this, but as I said a specific written
rule doe not exist for a baptism gown for 6-8 yearl old.

would have worn while getting baptized in the 1860s in the Plains.
(Specifically, she said 1869 in Kansas.) My hunch is that a child's dress
would have been similar to an infant's christening gown, just bigger, but I
can't find anything to confirm that. One problem is that infant gowns are
referred to frequently, but nothing for slightly older children.
