Position Announcement



Assistant Archivist: year-round, full-time, entry-level position in the
Curatorial Department.  Primary responsibility is the cataloging of archival
records including manuscripts, photographs, and architectural drawings.
Duties also include directing the work of student interns and assigned
administrative tasks.  Requires an M.A. in history or an M.L.S.., with a
concentration in Archival Management; and experience processing archival
records.  A familiarity with Microsoft Office software an advantage.

The Biltmore Company manages the Biltmore Estate, a 7,000 acre property
south of the city of Asheville.  The centerpiece of the estate is Biltmore
House, the home of George W. Vanderbilt, completed in 1895.  The archives is
a rich source for the work of Richard Morris Hunt, the architect, and
Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect.  Other important collections
relate to the Vanderbilt family, the establishment of scientific forestry in
America, 20th century horticulture, and the modern historic preservation
movement.

Starting salary is $21,300 and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
