New England Archivists

Archivists from throughout New England will meet October 20-21 at Holy Cross
College for the fall New England Archivists (NEA) meeting "Growing From Our
Roots: Traditional Archival Activities in a New Era." The meeting will
feature speeches and presentations on topics ranging from starting an
archival program to donor relations and accessibility in archives.

Friday's activities will involve an NEA sponsored workshop "Caring for
Historical Records: An Introduction." and a Society of American Archivists
workshop "Archival Cataloging as a Component of Description. The NEA board
will meet on October 20, with discussion sessions and presentations
scheduled for the next day.

Saturday's activities begin with a keynote address by Boston University
assistant professor Jill Lepore, author of "The Name of War: King Philip's
War and the Origins of American Identity." Lepore's address will be followed
by sessions on donors, accessibility and archives, finding aids, reference
in archives, ethical issues for archivists, starting an archival program,
electronic records issues, using volunteers, and developing cooperative
collecting policies.

The afternoon's activities will take the form of discussion groups on
weeding collections, archival security and access, preservation, basic
records management, diaries and letters, stress management, tips for new
archivists, and publicity. The discussion groups will be held twice during
the afternoon. An ice cream social will follow the meeting.
