Re: Mylar

Donna,
I forgot two very important points: Never completely encapsulate a document. Leave a gap (about 1/4" at each corner) if fully encapsulating a document. Also, be wary of using any kind of deacidification solution (such as Wei-To). If a document is already brown and crumbly, deacidifying it will do no good. If you do use a solution, test a very small corner of the document to see if the solution will discolor it. Many years ago I watched a conservator deacidifying a letter from the Civil War and the Wei-To solution turned the paper a bright pink color. In the case of brittle and discolored documents, preservation photocopying and limiting the handling of the original are your best bets.

I have a question that I thought perhaps the listserve could help me with.
The question has been raised as to the possible pros and cons of using mylar
to house old documents instead of using acid free paper or acid free folders
to file the documents. Obviously the mylar is more expensive, but does it
really protect the documents better? Has anyone had any long term negative
results from using mylar?
