Re: Great Job Opportunity???

This is a great job opportunity if you consider an 11 month promise of
employment "great". I understand that many project archivists are offered a
limited-term contract because the project has a set beginning and ending
date. That makes good fiscal sense and gives many beginning archivists an
opportunity to gain experience. However, I've seen more and more full-time,
permanent archival positions offered on a "one year contract" or
limited-term basis. Why is that? Do these organizations not expect the
archives/special collections to exist longer than one year? Are they hiring
archivists for limited terms so that they can let them go at contract
expiration if any personality or professional conflicts exist (like a "trial
basis")? More insidiously, is it possible that professional archivists are
being hired on a limited term basis to set up shop and once policies and
procedures have been put in place, replace them with paraprofessionals? I'm
not intentionally trying to be seditious. I'm truly curious about why an
apparently obvious professional position would be posted as limited term and
I'm equally curious to know who would apply for this position and why?
