Public Records lawsuit

Today's NYTimes has a very interesting article in their Cyber Law section
entitled "Suit Considers Computer Files"
<snip>
When the public schools in Exeter, N.H., gave Internet access to students in
1998, they chose not to use filtering or blocking software on classroom
terminals, opting instead for a less restrictive combination of supervision
and spot-checks.
That alarmed James M. Knight. At the time, he had four children going to
schools in the area, and he was concerned that they and their peers might be
exposed to pornographic Web sites and other inappropriate material.
So in 1999, Knight asked school officials to allow him to inspect special
computer files that would reveal the Internet sites visited by all computer
users in the schools of two local districts. He wanted to see if students
were making end-runs around the monitoring and supervision plan put in place
by the schools.
