Re: Archival Shelving

I have tried several different types of shelving but have come to like the
Borroughs Steel Bookcases best. (You can find these in the Gaylord catalogue
and may see them in other library or archival supply catalogues as well).
They are available in 12" or 18" depths and you can purchase additional
shelves for your units. The shelves themselves slide in and out of support
slots contained in the vertical sides and this makes it very easy to change
the location of shelving to accommodate the height of the collection you are
placing there. You don't need to be a 200# weight lifter to make the
shelving changes or keep a box of tools handy to do it! These are
library-quality shelves -- not office-quality which will only support 40 or
50 pounds. Purists out there might argue that you need some kind of
metal-mesh shelving for air-flow, but I have yet to find a system with
shelving that offered the kind of weight-capacity, spacing adaptability, and
ease of adjustment that the Burroughs system offer. If you feel you need
metal-mesh shelves for a part of your collection, however, there is no
reason you couldn't use more than one vendor or shelf style.

Subject: Archival Shelving

The Duggan Library Archives at Hanover College in southern Indiana are
preparing for a renovation and expansion. Does anyone have recommendations
and/or experiences with various companies that provide archival shelving?
Right now we're not looking at movable shelving as much as permanent stacks.
Any suggestions or companies to recommend would be appreciated.
