Re: Demand for archivists and records managers in the 21st century

Mr. Daines, I think about these questions too. I've been
very optimistic about good Federal Archivist positions
becoming available because the baby boomers are nearing
retirement yet today I read in the Washington Post that if
Mr. Gore becomes President, he will continue to shrink the
federal workforce, and as people retire, they will not be
replaced. How sad. Do you know it's been a decade since the
Library of Congress, Manuscript Division has been able to
hire a single Professional Archivist position? And many
spots have been vacated but they are just not filled so the
fed. gov't must rely contracters which means lack of job
security. Oh well, I hope in the early part of my career
to see that change, as that is an area in which I'd like to
work. Jennifer

Also what effect will the retirement of baby boomer archivists/records managers have on the profession in terms of positions available? Just some intriguing questions that I can't quite make go away. Thanks for your help.
