Subject: New UH Automated Library System

This message provides information about the UH System Libraries' new
automation system scheduled for implementation this Spring semester. We
plan to share this information as broadly as possible. Please help us by
passing this message along to faculty, colleagues and students.
*********
In the Spring semester the University of Hawai`i System Libraries will
launch a new online system that will support many electronic services
needed by today's library users. Our new system, Hawai`i Voyager, offers
easy access to the online catalog, patron account information, and
Internet sites through browsers such as Netscape and Internet Explorer.

As a library user, you will be able to:

* Search the holdings, including periodicals, of UH libraries statewide in
  a single database
* Email search results
* Link to full-text electronic journals and other resources
* View your library record using your current library card ID# (items
checked out, recalls, due dates, fines and fees)
* Renew your items online

Since the new Voyager system is based on current web interface design, it
should be intuitive and easy to learn. There is an online help feature
within the system and library staff is available to offer
assistance. Handouts on system features, operations and search tips will
also be available.

The software for the Voyager system is a product of Endeavor Information
Systems, Inc. and is based on client-server technology using Oracle's
relational database management system. Voyager is in use by about 400
libraries, including a number of large universities (e.g. Princeton
University, Northwestern University, the University of Wisconsin), the
National Library of Medicine, and the Library of Congress.

The Voyager system represents a major improvement over our current
automated system, UHCARL. UHCARL was installed ten years ago and the
version we are running does not have a full-featured Web interface. In
addition, UHCARL is a mainframe-based system that is no longer supported
by CARL Corporation.

We will do our best to minimize the impact of the Voyager implementation
on your library activities. We will provide detailed and up-to-date
information on our Voyager implementation web site, a link from the
library's home page at http://www.hawaii.edu/lib. You may also contact
the Library via email (library@hawaii.edu) or by phone (808-956-7205) if
you have questions or suggestions. Your support and cooperation are
appreciated.
