DOCUMENTARY HERITAGE GRANT AWARDS

Community Commitment to History

BOSTON, October 31, 2000. William Francis Galvin, Secretary of the
Commonwealth announced the grant awards for Cycle 3 of the Documentary
Heritage Grant program. The awards totaled $88,505. Fourteen applications
were determined to have met the funding criteria and priorities, including:
*       Carlisle Historical Society: $6,500.00. Finding Carlisle: "...a
community documentation plan that recommends management and identification
aids to locate and provide intellectual access to document collections
currently held in multiple locations, and to provide outlines and
recommendations for collections policies for each."
*       Clarksburg Town Library: $4,700.00. The Clarksburg Historical Plan:
"....to obtain funds to formulate a collaborative community historical care
and preservation plan of the history of the Town of Clarksburg."
*       Brockton Public Library: $7000.00. Forging Links With Brockton's
Past: "...to create a strategic plan to identify, collect, preserve, and
display Brockton's historical documents, records, and artifacts...that will
lead to an enhanced sense of community, an enlightened appreciation for the
city's past, and the development of a shared historical consciousness and
pride."
*       Lancaster Historical Commission: $3,000.00. Greater Lancaster
Heritage Documentation Project: "....to identify, assess and catalog the
historical records and manuscripts of the Town of Lancaster...to improve
historical appreciation and awareness in as many of the organizations in the
community as possible."
*       Lawrence, Immigrant City Archives: $7,150.00. Planning for the
Future of Lawrence's Past: "...to support a cooperative effort to develop a
procedure for identifying and surveying historical records of
Lawrence...intended as the point from which to launch a longer-term
community documentation planning process."
*       Town of Medway: $4,000.00. Medway Historic Documents Initiative: "to
make the panoply of Medway history accessible to the general public by
surveying, assessing, organizing Medway historical documents."
*       Town of Millville: $3,000.00. Collaborative Record Development Plan
for Millville: "...for a collaborative community documentation plan...to
educate our record keepers and develop a record keeping program."
*       New Bedford Free Public Library: $10,000.00. Whaling Crew List
Internet Database:  "to initiate a project to preserve the primary sources
on New Bedford's whaling heritage and to make accessible on the Wide World
Web a comprehensive index to crewmen on whaling voyages from the New Bedford
Customs District from 1807-1925."
*       North Adams Public Library: $7,300.00. Preserving the Heritage of
North Adams: "to identify, organize and make accessible the historical
records of North Adams; and to educate the community and record holders in
the best practices in caring for their historical records."
*       Sharon Public Library: $7,800.00. Sharon Historical Information
Network: "...to form a cooperative affiliation of civic, religious, and
social organizations in the town of Sharon with the object of documenting
our community and sharing our historical resources." Participating in the
grant are the Sharon Public Library, the Town Clerk's office, the Sharon
Historical Society, the Sharon Historical Commission, several social clubs
and religious denominations.
*       Shirley, Hazen Public Library: $6,000.00. Shirley Historic Records
Project: "...to initiate a community documentation plan to educate the
public as to the value and appropriate care of Shirley's records; and to
promote better organization and accessibility of these records."
*       Wareham Free Library: $8,300.00. A Strategic Plan for the
Preservation of Wareham's Historic Records: "to support the development of a
strategic plan to identify and preserve Wareham's historic records-those
already generated and those to be created in the future."
*       Williamsburg Historical Society: $7,000.00. Williamsburg:
Documenting an Agricultural Community: "...to create a community-wide
strategic plan for the preservation, processing, use, interpretation and
collection policies for the community's archives."
*       City of Worcester: $6,754.00. Worcester's Documentary Heritage
Project: "to design and develop a collaborative action plan to address,
document, and disseminate the findings of the under-documented public
records within City Hall."

The Documentary Heritage grant program has awarded a total of $200,000 over
a sequence of three cycles (October 1999-October 2000). A total of 31
Massachusetts local historical records projects applications have been
selected from 71 applications. The priorities for funding were projects
designed to educate the public to value historical records and archives,
promote collaboration to achieve common goals, plan for adequate
documentation of Massachusetts history, and improve the accessibility and
preservation of historical records.

The grant program was sponsored by William Francis Galvin, Secretary of the
Commonwealth, and the Massachusetts Historical Records Advisory Board and,
was made possible through a grant from the National Historical Publications
and Records Commission (NHPRC), a division of the National Archives and
Records Administration.

FORUM 2001: Planning has begun for the fourth annual forum on historical
records, that will be held on May 11, 2001, at the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst. The forum is being co-sponsored by the University of
Massachusetts Amherst Library and Hampshire Country Historical Records
Preservation Advisory Board. The theme of the forum 2001 is "Telling Our
Story" and will continue to build upon the planning and activities of the
previous three forums: Advocating Massachusetts History, Building Alliances,
and Documenting Our Heritage.

ARCHIVES AND RECORD MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS: In response to the need for
archival consultants for Documentary Heritage grants the MHRAB staff is
maintaining a database of consultants containing information related to
specific work experience, interests, and geographical location. If you are
