Confederate Currency

Boy, that post on rebel money got me to thinking. One of the more
interesting news events up here in Montana during the last decade (aside
from the Unabomber) was the Freemen episode. You all might remember this
happy-go-lucky group who decided to declare their compound an independent
state and issue their own legal documents and such. I'm not sure they got
around to actually printing currency, but they did make up a bunch of
impressive bonds and writs that actually had a few folks up here stumped for
a time. (Maybe these guys also designed that Florida ballot...)

Anyhow, I am sure that most of these documents have ended up as evidence in
the several legal actions against the Freemen, and I hope that whoever takes
charge of them afterwards (the National Archives via the Justice Department
or the Montana Historical Society via the state courts) makes sure these
items are preserved. It is just possible that, like the Jeff Davis
shinplasters, these bonds will actually become MORE valuable than they were
originally issued for!
