Re: the invisible cataloging system

Two possibilities:

The expensive way, which is to make/buy phase boxes for each book, then put
labels on the boxes with call numbers on them. The down side is the cost and
the rare or attractive bindings of the books will be hidden from view; on the
plus side, they'd be well protected.

The cheaper approach would be to use flags; write the call numbers on slices of
acid-free paper and stick them inside each volume. It wouldn't look terribly
attractive, and you risk the loss of a particular book's call number, but it
would be cheap.

In either case, I would just go with any standard numbering system, or something
intelligent of your own creation. If you've got a good database, it really
doesn't matter what system you use, as long as it's consistent & coherent. You
can put LC call numbers on phase boxes or flags as easily as you would on the
spine of the book itself.

Just my 2 cents.
