Yeah, don't mark them....all that messy ownership proof gets in the way of
people who want to steal the books someday...

Shheeeeshh....museum people have been marking priceless objects with
accession numbers for decades.  How come we get so squeamish when it comes
to a book?  I realize this is the DONOR'S conditions and not the preference
of the CURATOR, but this is like a lot of strings that come with gifts that
we are taught to avoid.  I would take a long look at this horse's mouth...
