relating to Black Mountain College. The college was located outside the
town of Black Mountain, NC, from 1933 to 1956. Its radical innovations in
methods of higher education and its
remarkably talented faculty and students had a profound effect on
20th-century art, literature, and education in the US and abroad. The
Archives has the records of the college itself; interviews and original and

Endowment for the Humanities. The Archivist II and a grant-funded
part-time Data Control Clerk IV will be part of the Special Collections
Branch of the State Archives and will work with their supervisor and other
members of the staff to complete this project within the 18
months. Responsibilities of the
archivist include arrangement; description in register finding aids and in
the local automated finding aids system; working with a consultant to
ensure the proper identification of materials and their copyright and
release status; creation of collection-level MARC records; using a template
to convert finding aids to Encoded Archival Description for better Web
access; and the writing of
periodic reports to NEH.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Familiarity with standards of archival description, including MARC and
APPM, and some understanding of EAD; ability to apply proper archival
techniques in the appraisal, arrangement, and description of historical
records and documents; ability to write clear, accurate, and succinct
descriptions of archival material; a working knowledge of reference sources
for historical materials; ability to function independently on assigned
projects to high standards; ability to work in unstructured situations;
capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
other employees and the general public; and a solid grounding in computers
and computer techniques.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a four-year college or university preferably with a major
in history, library science, or a related social science and two years of
progressive experience in archives and records work, or an equivalent
combination of training and experience. Prefer candidates with graduate
training in archival management, history, or public administration as well
as substantive appraisal, arrangement, description, and reference
experience. Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists (CA) also
is desirable. Interviewing supervisors are Barbara T. Cain and Jesse R.
