Cataloger for Manuscripts and Visual Materials
Mellon Foundation grant-funded project, based at the New-York Historical
Society Library. Position is funded until December 31, 2002.
Description: create collection-level and item-level MARC cataloging
records for the New-York Historical Society Library?s manuscripts,
archives, and visual materials collections, drawing on information from
the card catalog, published guides to the collections, and finding
aids. Catalog in NYU?s BobCat system, using AACR2, APPM, Betz?s
Graphic Materials, LCSH, AAT, and the MARC format. Perform
substantial name authority research and subject analysis.
Required qualifications: ALA accredited MLS; 2 years cataloging
experience; familiarity with MARC AMC and/or VIM formats, RLIN or OCLC,
and automated cataloging systems; flexible, creative approach to
providing bibliographic control over a large and diverse collection; and
experience working with archives and/or visual materials. Knowledge
of American and/or New York history preferred.
Position available: immediately.
Salary: commensurate with experience and background; minimum:
$35,000.
The New-York Historical Society Library affiliated with the New York
University Libraries in June 1997. The New-York Historical
Society?s research library is one of the oldest in the country, and a
principal source for primary and secondary research in the study of New
York history and life. Its collections encompass approximately
400,000 volumes; 7,000 linear feet of manuscripts, including diaries,
letters, and military, political and business records; and an estimated
one million items in its print, photograph and architecture
collections.
